Annual Governance Statement - September 2016

The Governing Body of Croft Community School has a strong focus on its three core strategic functions:

  • Ensuring the clarity of vision
  • Holding the Head Teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and it's pupils, the performance and management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school ad making sure its money is well spent

Governance Arrangements

The full Governing Body and the various committees meet once each term, unless there is a need to hold additional meetings.

  • Finance, Buildings & Staffing Committee; Meets termly to discuss all financial matters.
  • Curriculum Standards Committee; Meets termly, focus on curriculum policies.
  • Personnel Committee; Meets termly, focussing on staffing matters, recruitment and performance management.

In addition there are the following committees:

  • Pay Review Committee
  • Appeals Committee
  • Head Teachers Performance Committee

During the past year the Governing Body has changed significantly, with Katrina Culyer elected as Chair of Governors and welcoming Hugh Embleton, Jude Hawthorn and Sharon Common as new co-opted Governors.

In addition to being committee members, Governors at Croft Community School are also linked to aspects and or subjects of the school.  The Head Teacher and Chair of Governors meet monthly to discuss the schools current position as part of the schools monitoring process.

Each year Croft Community School holds a school led Governors Conference.

All Governing Body meetings are productive, and on most occasions, well attended.

Key Issues faced by the Governing Body

The Governing Body of Croft Community School has fulfilled its duties in terms of monitoring areas of the schools work whilst simultaneously offering support and appropriate challenge through agreed agendas of both committee and Full Governing Body meetings.

  • Agreeing and monitoring the use of Pupil Premium
  • School monitoring Governor visits implemented termly
  • Governors meetings scheduled regularly with Curriculum / SIP and Link Governors
  • Providing opportunities for growing leaders through budget by developing an effective Middle Leadership Team, ensuring rigor throughout the curriculum
  • Monitoring of pupil progress across the school including the review of the Curriculum and new qualifications to KS4
  • Recruitment of skilled staff to meet the needs of the expanded school

Assessment of Impact

Governors provide a high level of challenge to the Head Teacher and the school.  Governors consider a range of documents and data provided by the school in order to make informed accurate judgements of strategies implemented within the school.

The implementation of the monitoring calendar has provided a more co-ordinated framework for both Governors and staff.  As a result, Governors have:

  • Increased their knowledge of the school by meeting with relevant staff
  • Governors have asked challenging questions using forums and meetings with a variety of school staff
  • Governors have carried out Learning Walks monitoring the impact of specific resources purchased
  • Governors have scrutinised a variety of data and have attended LA training and information sessions
  • The above has led to a greater ability when challenging the Head Teacher and holding the Head Teacher to account
  • Feedback from both parents and pupils has been gathered at regular intervals

Future plans for the Governing Body

  • To review committee structure and implement any necessary changes regarding members
  • Continue with school monitoring as detailed in the school monitoring calendar 2016/2017
  • To continue to hold the school to account, ensuring the best possible outcomes for pupils are achieved and / or exceeded
  • To continue to move the school forward to secure a 'GOOD' in our next OFSTED inspection
