Introduction

Dear Parents / Carers

I am writing to you to introduce myself.  My name is Mr Lee Davis and I was appointed as Head of Croft School on the 17 July last academic year.  I took up the post officially on 03 September.   Firstly, I wanted to apologise for not writing to you sooner and for not preparing or consulting you on some of the changes that we have introduced from September.

Some of these changes are:

Introduction of staff second names and ‘Sir’ or ‘Miss’   - the rationale behind this is, is that although we are a Special School we are attempting to create an ethos and a culture of mutual respect that mirrors some of the experiences that our children’s peers will have in a mainstream setting.

Friday Afternoon enrichment activities – Students in the Secondary department will have an enrichment choice on a Friday afternoon that is offered by our staff.  This is wholly down to the choice of the staff and with input from the students.  The idea is that students will pick an activity that they are interested in which allows them to socialise with peers, develop soft skills like teamwork and listening skills as well as developing self-esteem and self-confidence.    Some of the activities on offer this term will be rebound therapy, baking, football, drama, gymnastics, board games, gardening, signing choir and an art project.   These will all be accredited through the AQA unit award scheme.

Primary students, on a Friday afternoon will participate in Golden Time, which mirrors the intentions of the Enrichment activities described above but directed towards students in the Primary department.

I have been a teacher for 22 years in County Durham and all of those have been in a Special Educational Needs setting.  I was previously Assistant Head at The Oaks Secondary School for 13 years.

As you are aware Croft Community School is part of the North and South West Durham Federation which is made up of Evergreen Primary School, Croft Community School and The Oaks Secondary School, this means that we have an Executive Headteacher responsible for all three schools, Mrs Andrea English.   She will be based at Croft School for two days a week and will work in the school alongside the SLT.

We strongly believe that by working alongside and with parents we can achieve great things with our pupils and should you have any suggestions of improvements we can make or concerns or issues you may have please don’t hesitate to contact the school.  We have an ‘open door’ policy with staff and all parents so if you wish to either contact the school by phoning or by calling in we will do our best to accommodate you.

We will be holding a coffee morning on Wednesday 12 September 9.30am to 10.30am for all parents and carers where there will be an open forum where you can come and meet me and can voice opinions, ideas and issues.   I also intend to continue this throughout the year and on the calendar below there are marked in dates and times when this open forum coffee morning and evening will be available.

If you would rather communicate on a 1:1 basis, again, please don’t hesitate to contact the school.

These forums will take place on the following dates:
