Reading & Writing in Lower School

How reading and writing is taught in Lower School

All pupils learn phonics through the ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme.

Additional resources used to support are:

  • Jolly Phonics scheme materials
  • Phonics Play website
  • Education City website

Pupils in Lower 2 and Lower 3 read daily in class. The reading scheme we use is Oxford Reading Tree.

Pupils in Lower 1 have a daily story and group reading time and as they are ready will begin with individual readers.

Pupils in Lower School have regular and frequent opportunities to practise handwriting skills. This year the acquisition of independent writing skills throughout the school is a focus for school development.
