Croft Community School believes that having the opportunity to learn a modern foreign language has a vital role to play in the education of its students. Through the study of a foreign language, pupils understand and appreciate different countries, cultures, people and communities – and as they do so, begin to think of themselves as citizens of the world as well as of the United Kingdom.
At Croft the language studied is French. They explore the similarities and differences between the French and English . Their listening, reading and memory skills improve, and their speaking and writing become more accurate. T
he development of these skills, together with pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the structure of language lays down the foundations for future study of languages.
In French we begin Year 7 by giving students an overview of the country including its history, social and economic status and geographical features. The French language is then introduced and built on for the rest of year 7 and continues into Year 8 and 9.
Where possible we try to make the French lessons cross-curricular with links to as many other subjects in Key Stage 3 as possible. This can be seen on the long-term plan.
