Finley’s welcome blog
Hi my name is Finley
and i will be doing a weekly school blog.
P3 love trampolining.
Trampolining is a great way to interact and initiate communication.
As a class we use the trampoline in many different way, such as; to support self-regulation, PECS exchange, rebounding, turn taking and maths.
P3 enjoy using our PECS book to request the number of bounces we do and then develop our number skills by bouncing the requested number before stopping.
Article 28 – Every child has the right to an education.
During trampolining we work on our balance and how to move safely around. Mrs Convery sometimes asks us to sit in the middle and practice keeping our balance. She will bounce us trying to knock us off balance, this helps us work on our core strength and balance.
“It is lots of fun!”
We all take it in turns and support each other by standing around the trampoline and cheering for each other.
Article 15 – Every child has the right to meet with other children and to join
groups.
At the end of every session we then have time to relax, lying on the mat or under the blanket and listening to some relaxing music. Mrs Convery will bounce us slowly.
Article 31 – Every child has the right to relax and play.
We have been learning about maps this term, so some of P7 went out and about in Annfield Plain to practise our skills. We followed a route of 2.2 km, working hard to keep the maps correctly orientated and discussing symbols as we went.
Do you know why mushrooms are not marked on a map?!
Year 11 Design Technology pupils had a ‘preparing for adulthood’ challenge today. They had 2 sofas to construct from flat pack, the first one was full of learning curves, but they worked as a team and completed it within one and a half lessons. They were then feeling confident and completed the second sofa in only 15 minutes, learning from their mistakes, remembering how to overcome issues and working without any staff intervention. Then of course we couldn’t throw the boxes away, they got used for outdoor play.
P4 were asked if they could be part of some doctoral research on sensory processing, working with Liz Jones from Durham University.
Some parents and carers were more than happy to help and teachers were fascinated by the research.
We can’t wait to read the final research documents when they are published.

Wednesday 20th November was ‘World Children’s Day’ and marked the 30th birthday of the UN Convention for the Rights of the Child. In p5 we celebrated having children’s rights and being able to enjoy our rights by having cake!
P5 have been working with P14 this morning using microscopes in science learning about the different parts and how to use them.
Today, P15 engaged in an interactive workshop with a recovery worker and trainer from County Durham and Darlington Drug and Alcohol Service. They learned about the physical, social and psychological effects of drug and alcohol abuse, the difference between legal and illegal drugs, Class A, B and C drugs as well as investigating what drugs look like. The students especially enjoyed putting on the beer goggles and were shocked at how our vision and coordination are affected by alcohol!
Today Year 11 went to Beamish Museum to find out about the career opportunities, work experience and job training the organisation could offer young people. Pupils discussed and experienced working in various roles within the museum such as; communications, costume and design, artifacts and buildings, community and animal care. Pupils were given a full experience by dressing up in authentic dress and taking part in working tasks that took place in Edwardian and the 1950’s time periods.
Primary and Secondary students took part in an Anti-bullying assembly today discussing how pupils, staff and parents/carers can work together to stamp out bullying for good. Pupils and staff also received awards for their odd sock day challenge on Tuesday. #antibullyingweek2019 #changestartswithus
