Beech – Christmas Science

Tuesday in Beech was all about Forces.

We tried out a little water resistance.

Friction by spinning marbles on different surfaces was fun. And picking up the paintbrush in the rice was pretty amazing too – all friction.

Gravity we tried out by tilting the paperclips on the rod and by dropping balls of different weights; then different sizes. This was especially good to watch in slow motion!

We investigated air resistance, by comparing two cars – one aerodynamic and the other with a front more like a bus.

Following all of this we were ready to design Santa’s sleigh, to make it super efficient against gravity, air resistance and friction. And these were a couple of the ideas we came up with…

Santa, call Beech class for engineering consultation – we have some great ideas!
