OPAL Crew
We are the OPAL crew and meet every Friday during enrichment to organise equipment, tidy things away, write letters to companies to ask for items and also have some fun!!
Today P3 learnt about Remembrance Day.
Miss Robson put a picture on the whiteboard and asked “Who is this?”
P3 thought that the photograph was old and he looked like a soldier.
We then looked at artifacts belonging to the soldier to discover that his name was Ernest Johnson Glaholm or “Uncle Ernie” to Miss Robson.
We also discovered that he was a Sergeant and got the Military Medal for bravery and was in the London Gazette.
We worked out that he was 24 years old when he joined the army and served for 8 years.
We looked at Sgt. Ernest Johnson Glaholm’s Soldier’s book and were able to gather additional information about him, such as who his family were and where he served.
We also spoke about the poppy and why it is important. We looked at the story ‘Poppy Field’ by Michael Morpurgo and created poppy field pictures.
On Friday we are going to create some poems, keep a look out for them.
Just a little reminder that poppies are on sale in school.
Lest we forget.
In P3 we communicate in many different ways. Today we enjoyed playing games using our PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) communication books.
Mr Potato Head
Pupils had to request the different body parts for Mr Potato Head using PECS. This meant being able to recognise and match a symbol to the object before attaching the body part to the correct place.
As you can see we had lots of fun.
P3 are excited for Bonfire night.
We spoke about the different fireworks displays we have seen over the weekend and discussed how to stay safe.
Some of the pupils said they went to a bonfire and other said they watched the fireworks from their window.
P3 then looked at different types of skyline pictures and created their own skyline firework pictures.
“Blue firework”
“Wow fireworks!”
Happy Bonfire Night!
Stay safe everyone!
P3 love music with Rick on a Tuesday.
We have been learning how to recognise a pattern in a rhythm and follow a beat.
We are working on listening to each other to be able to recognise the rhythm being played and then guessing which vegetable we heard being played.
We then created our own 4 part rhythm and played it for our friends.
P3 say…
“I love music” “I like it” “We played with the drum”
We are excited for next weeks lesson!
As part of our work about Canada, P2 received a call from a very important person.
Simon Collier, Manager of Solutions and Standard at the University of Alberta, called so that we could interview him about life in Canada. Simon used to live in Ryton before his family emigrated to Canada when Simon was 19 years old.
Simon told us :
~ That the temperature ranges from 25 degrees C (similar to our warmest summer days) down to -25 degrees C (That’s colder than our freezer!).
~ It takes 8h to fly to where he lives,
~ There was a large fire a few years ago in the Rockies but it all the animals ran away.
~ His favourite Canadian food is Poutine, this is chips with cheese and gravy.
~ Children in Canada learn similar things to us.
~ Canada is 7h behind us time wise.
A Massive thank you to Simon for a getting up so early to speak to us.
In P1 we love listening to stories and like to help our teachers tell stories that we know. We have been practicing our letters and words to help us to learn to read.
Today there will be a special event going on after school. The school will hold a Halloween disco from 3:30 and 5:30. Students were allowed to come in casual clothing into school to prevent the need to go home and get changed.
P8 have been looking at the feeling of peace in RE. Today we have been doing yoga and discussing how yoga and gentle exercise makes us feel peaceful and how the mind and body are linked.
