Supporting our local community – planting trees
The Garden Enrichment group headed off to plant trees at South Causey on Wednesday, 7th February. Together we planted 200, including rowan, dog rose, holly and hawthorn, varieties that will support birds and other wildlife in the future with their berries. The pupils were keen to get it right in order for their trees to survive into the future, and benefited from the knowledge and support of staff from Wear Rivers Trust, Durham County Council and South Causey Inn head gardener, Stephen. A real local community venture, providing our young people with the chance to learn valuable skills. Special thanks go to Claire Dodds, Wear Rivers Trust, for inviting us to take part.

Rowans Trip to the Hancock Museum
Rowan went on a very interesting trip to the Hancock Museum in Newcastle.
We went here to see items that had been found from the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age as part of our History.
We found some weapons, pots and kitchen items.
When we arrived at the Hancock Museum we got some nice tasks to do, we got a lovely book to read. We were able to roll a dice that told us to look for certain things in the Museum.
Rowan class loved looking at all of the animals, they were amazed at how big the elephant and shark were.
Here are some images to show how much of a good time we had.Â
Rowan Water Safety
In Rowan we have been learning about water safety in preparation for our swimming lessons next half term.
Today we found out about cold water shock and what to do if we ever fall into cold water.
We know we must float like a starfish.
We had to complete a little experiment.
If we were feeling brave we could put our hand into cold water and count how long it took for us to feel too cold and take our hand out.
Our longest time was 60 seconds which was amazing but very cold!
Rowan Visit to Neuroactive
Rowan went out into the community today to see the wonderful work of the Neuroactive group which is based in Ouston Community Centre.
The centre specialises in the support and rehabilitation of adults with neurological conditions, brain injuries and strokes to build their self confidence and develop their independence skills.
We joined in with some singing, played basketball, made some lovely Easter pictures and we were lucky enough to meet the therapy dogs too!

Active Maths in Rowan
In Rowan we have dedicated one lesson a week to make our Maths lessons active!
This is where we learn Maths through exercises and making sure we are not sitting in our chairs.
This week we have been recapping our times table. We practiced these with our cubes and then we got a ball, if we got the answer right the ball got passed to us and then it was our turn to throw it. We have been recapping our 2,3,4,5 and 10 times tables.
We absolutely loved this lesson! It was so much fun!
After we passed the ball, we put some times tables songs on and danced to them while singing the times table. Our dance moves were great!
Rowan week 8.1.24
PE
In PE we have been looking at something new! This term we will be learning how to play tennis. We had been practicing to catch the little tennis balls as well as learning how to balance them on our tennis rackets. This was a little tricky at first but we tried to get the hand of it.
Once we practiced balancing the tennis ball on the racket we had a relay in teams! It was super competitive.
Science
We also had a very interesting Science lesson, in Science we have been learning about different habitats and we have been talking about the different habitats that animals live in. We decided that we were going to go on an adventure around our school premises to see if we could see any animals in their habitats. We had magnifying glass to help us if we saw any little insects.
The children loved looking at things through the magnifying glass.
We decided that it was a little too cold for the animals to come out so we are going to try again at the end of this term to see if we can find anymore however we did find these two. We think they were baby slugs.
Oak class gymnastics festival
Oak class had a lovely time at the gymnastics festival. They got to explore different equipment such as the vault, springboard, bars, balance beam and the air track.
Everyone had a brilliant time.
Well done Oak Class!
