One of the cars for motor vehicles has been delivered this morning and the group can’t wait to get stuck in next week. As you can see here they were excited to have a look around it this morning 🚙

During our History lessons this term we are focusing on Anglo Saxons and during this afternoon Rowan, Hazel and Oak worked through a carousel of activities including preparing and making broth with fresh vegetables which the Saxons would eat to sustain their energy to work on the farms ploughing and growing the crops of the wheat and barley. Some made jewellery from coloured clay which represented the clips and brooches worn to keep clothes together. Shields were recreated from painted circles to protect the Anglo – Saxon warriors bodies as they sailed across the North Sea in their wooden ships.
In Art 9G learned about lightsource and explored the effects that changing the direction of a lightsource can create in a photographic portrait.
7O have been learning about the charity event Jeans for Genes, and have started making keyrings from old jeans to raise money for charities supporting people with a genetic condition.
Every morning the children come into school during registration and have a choice of reading or going on to Lexia. Lexia is a reading program to improve the children’s reading skills. The children come in to Birch and will have quiet time to do this.
To introduce our new Science topic, Earth and Space, Beech class have been learning about the shape of the earth, moon and sun and how we know. We looked at Aristotle’s theory, which suggested that the earth is a sphere and then created our own version of planet earth. We have all settled back in to school and are all working hard!
Birch started Science and part of our knowledge statement is to understand why the Earth and other planets are spherical. We then created a globe using playdough ensuring we had the different layers and using blue for the sea and earth colours for the islands. The children all went outside and tried to identified how we know that the Earth was sphere. The children mentioned that everything they looked at such as the fence in the playground and the playground ground was all straight.
For our English Knowledge Statement we started to read our story ‘Hansel and Gretel’ by Neil Gaiman and Lorenzo Mattotti. On Friday we made a prediction by looking at the front cover and what we thought might happen in the story. Today we thought about how the woodcutter would feel at the beginning of the story. The children then had one pupil to draw around and we had to decide what feelings the woodcutter would have felt inside and then emotions that he portrayed on the outside. The children came up one by one and discussed how the woodcutter would feel.
We can’t wait to continue with our story !
For our knowledge statement for Mathematics we have introduced counting 1000’s using 10’s. We had a worksheet to show how we can count 10’s and we had to make the correct amount. We then did a practical where Miss Brannan asked the students to make a certain number using base 10’s and the children had to make sure their amount was correct.
Birch worked super hard in developing their skills in counting! Well done Birch.
Fantastic work with this lovely group of students in their vocational lessons this morning, working as a team! 🌟
